Reader’s Question:

I have a son who was recently involved in a car accident. The damage seemed to be minor because no one is involved and no one got hurt. What happened is that while he was trying to park his car, he accidentally hit a light pole. Now, what worries me is that even if he has auto insurance (liability insurance to be exact), will his car insurance company cover for the damage on the light pole or do we have to pay for the damage from our personal pockets?

I’m sorry to hear that. I hope everything’s well with your son.

Going back to your question, since you’ve mentioned that your son has liability coverage, to give you a better explanation regarding your question let me first define what liability coverage is all about.

Property Damage Liability provides coverage for policyholders in an event that he or she damages another party’s property. In your son’s case it was it was a light pole that was hit and was damaged. So given this scenario, your son’s car insurance policy will provide coverage for the damage that your son had incurred on the light pole.

However, I just wanna remind you Georgina that damage on your son’s car will not be covered by the mentioned coverage but instead he would need another coverage and that is collision coverage. To make sure he has collision coverage, it’s best to ask his car insurance agent in California.
