Reader’s Question:

What if I report a hit and run to my insurance carrier in Greeley, Colorado and I was not at fault will my insurance rates go up?

Wright

Greeley, CO

In most states the insurance regulations in place do not permit car insurance rates to be increased due to certain cases such as a hit and run or uninsured/underinsured insurance claim. But in states that do not govern if insurance rates can be affected for these types of insurance claims then it will be up to the individual insurance carrier’s guidelines and rating system to decide if your insurance rates would increase.

Your car insurance agent in Greeley, Colorado should be able to inform you more about your insurance company’s rating system and if a hit and run claim will affect your car insurance rates. Your state’s insurance regulatory body will be able to inform you about state insurance laws and may also be able to advise you specifically about your insurance company’s rating system since car insurance rates must be filed with this state agency.

Reader’s Question:

I was charged with reckless driving in East Seattle, Washington, and was ordered to obtain an SR22 form. It has been almost four years now and I still have the sr-22 certificate. I know I was only required to have it for just three years. Do I need to do something to remove the sr22?

Brenda

East Seattle, WA

It seems like that you were required to carry proof of Financial Responsibility (SR-22) Insurance Form to reinstate your license after a revocation or suspension due to a reckless driving violation. But you are correct that a person in this case normally needs to carry SR-22 insurance for three years.

To verify if your period for carrying an SR-22 for your reckless driving violation is up already you should contact the Washington Department of Licensing (DOL) or other state agency in East Seattle that required you to carry the SR-22. If your time period for holding the SR-22 form is over then the DOL or other Washington department should be able to help you what steps to take in order take off carrying this certificate of insurance.

I live in Canada and would like to buy a vehicle in Lakeland, Florida that I can use during the winter months. I am planning to bring it home to Canada for the summer months. Can I purchase car insurance in Florida that will cover Canada at the same time?

Leslie

Lakeland, FL

To insure and register a car in Lakeland, Florida you will need to acquire a Florida driver’s license. The FL Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles states that Canadian citizens are non-immigrants and are permitted to stay in the US without getting INS documentation. Canadians without INS documents must show proof of Canadian citizenship to be issued a FL driver license by providing two of the following: Canadian passport, Original or certified Canadian birth certificate, Canadian driver license, Canadian Naturalization certificate.

As for getting auto insurance, the mandatory liability insurance bought in Florida is different than what is required in Canada and because of this it would likely be not easy to find an insurance provider that could cover your car in both places. The Canadian Snowbird Association, might be able to assist you check if as a seasonal FL resident you can get car insurance for both FL and Canada. You might also speak this issue with your current Canadian car insurance provider.

What is the fine or penalty for driving without insurance in Minnesota ? I received it after the ticket citation.

Ray

In Minnesota, driving without insurance is a misdemeanor. If this violation occurs twice within 10 years it is considered a gross misdemeanor. The penalty can be a sentence for a fine of not less than $200 but not more than the maximum fine applicable to misdemeanors and imprisonment. In addition to the amount to be paid, the person convicted of this might also have their driver’s license revoked.

The Minnesota statutes states that a driver may produce proof of insurance no later than the specified date and time on the citation for their first court appearance. You will still have to pay the fine also as show proof of auto insurance at the time of your court date. For specifics regarding your case you may contact the Department of Motor Vehicles in MN.

Commuter Car Insurance Coverage Question

Reader’s Question:

Is it legal to include “commuting to work” if I only work 1-2 days a week, and if this isn’t my main work? What would happen if I get involve in an accident on the way to this part time job? Would I be covered under comprehensive coverage?

Bart

Los Angeles, CA

Basically, comprehensive coverage covers your car, and sometimes other cars you may be driving for losses resulting from accidents other than collision. For instance, comprehensive coverage insurance covers damage to your vehicle if it is stolen; or damaged by fire, flood, or animals. (It will pay to fix your car less the deductible you choose.)

Now, if you are talking about having an accident with another car, you would be talking about collision coverage then to help fix your car. Regarding your other concern, concealment or keeping information from your insurance provider and material misrepresentation by not telling the truth to your insurance carrier gives your insurance carrier grounds for voiding your car insurance policy. This means the insurance provider, will give you back any monies you paid into your auto insurance policy, and you will be stuck paying for the claims resulting from the accident.

Also, your insurer will probably not void it unless the case creates an increase in insurance rate or creates a situation that they would normally not insure. If you commute to and from work, where no business use is done in relation to your work, this is considered pleasure use. If this is the case, your car insurance rate should not change – unless your insurer rates your premiums based on your car’s daily mileage. Your best option is to contact your insurance provider. Let them know about your part time job and, let your insurance carrier determine your best course of action for your auto insurance needs.

Do I Get Reimbursed For Medical Expenses on Car Insurance Policy

Reader’s Question:

I have an auto insurance policy with medical payments. Do I have to reimburse the insurance provider for the medical payments?

Harry

Gulfport, MS

I think your question to be, do you have to reimburse the car insurance carrier for medical payments? Insurance carriers differ on their guidelines but medical insurance on car insurance policies usually only pays in excess of what your primary or personal medical insurance does not pay.

If your primary medical insurance paid and you were also reimbursed by your car insurance carrier for the same medical bill you might owe them money back. However if the car insurance medical coverage did what it is intended to do, pay the excess that your personal medical insurance did not cover, you should be fine. If you need information regarding your specific car insurance policy contact your insurance broker or agent.

Do I Have To Add My Name To Husbands Auto Insurance Policy

Reader’s Question:

My father gave me his car. The vehicle is in both our names and I am now married. What do I have to do to add this car to my husband’s insurance policy?

Tyler

Chicago, IL

Usually, you can add a car to your spouse’s insurance policy by an endorsement. An endorsement is a document which is attached to the policy that changes or modifies the original policy in some way. You will have to let your husband’s insurance provider know your father is also on the registration. Some insurance providers may require you to remove your father from the registration.

Other carriers will permit his name to remain on the registration and will ignore him entirely. Still, other carriers will permit his name to remain on the registration and give you a choice. They will inform you to either list him as an additional motorist on the policy or they will tell you to specifically exclude him from the policy. If you have to list him, and you choose to exclude him, the insurance carrier will probably have an extra form for you to sign.

Will My Car Insurance Rates Go Down If I Get Married

Reader’s Question:

I am getting married soon. Is it true that my car insurance rates would go down when I get married? How can that be? I live in New Jersey.

Ed

Clifton, NJ

Very interesting question, Ed!

Yes! Getting married will surely help you save some money on your car insurance in New Jersey. (Though I certainly hope you’re not getting married just to save a few dollars on auto insurance, huh?)

Do you have a wild guess why? It’s simply because auto insurers would see you as an entirely new and better person when you get married. Apparently, married people are much safer risks for auto insurance companies since they drive more responsibly, get fewer tickets, and much less likely to file claims as compared to the dingle drivers. You might want to send out a thank you note to your auto insurer once you get your next auto insurance premium after your wedding day!

But what is you’re already married? Can you still lower your auto insurance premiums? For starters, you can always consolidate yours and your spouse’s auto insurance policies under one company. By doing so, it is most likely that your auto insurance company would grant your reduced premium as compared to having 2 policies from different companies.
Another option is to get a multi-policy discount by finding a company that handles homeowner’s or renter’s insurance along with your auto insurance policy. This can considerably lower you auto insurance premium.

Reader’s Question:

Would it be cheaper if my girlfriend and I have a one auto insurance bill for all the vehicles that we separately own if we live together instead of separate insurance coverage with different insurance companies in Illinois?

Jim

Chicago, IL

It could be cheaper if you and your girlfriend get a multi-car policy for your household provided that you find an insurance company in Chicago, IL that permits for both of your cars to be on the same policy without you two being related or married.

If you find an insurance providers Chicago, IL that finds this insurance policy acceptable, then typically a multi-car insurance policy will be a lot cheaper than individuals that have separate policies on their own. A multi-driver or multi-vehicle discount may apply so ask the insurance company and also ask if there are any other discounts that you or your girlfriend may receive.

One of the best ways to get the cheapest priced insurance coverage is to do comparison shopping online for car insurance policies. You may start browsing individual insurance company websites to check for cheap auto insurance quote.
