Reader’s Question:
I am a new driver and I quite don’t know a lot about car insurance stuff. I know that there are a lot of different auto insurance polices but I don’t think I need them all. I have a full insurance coverage in Oak Park, Illinois. What should I cut down on my car insurance polices? I mean what policies should I remove?

First thing that you need to know is what is the mandatory state law for auto insurance in Illinois? Your home state requires bodily injury coverage with minimum limits of $20,000/person/accident and $40,000/accident and property damage coverage of $15,000/accident. Therefore, you must maintain those car insurance policies.
Now, the next thing that you should do is to know what does your budget allows you to pay? To help you with this, let me give you this advice. First, know the actual value of your car. If you are driving an old car, I don’t think it would be a good idea to include comprehensive and collision coverage on your policy. Because by insuring your car for collision and comprehensive policies, (which will cover you for damages incurred from collision with another car and non-related vehicular accidents) you might end up paying more for your policies as compared to the actual current value of your car.
