Auto Insurance Rate Quotes in Philadelphia Pennsylvania

Reader’s Question:

I have just moved to Philadelphia PA from New York. I’ve never had to own a car there since it was easier to commute than drive but I’m thinking of getting one now that I’ve moved here. What types of auto insurance do I need to get around in Philadelphia ? Can you guys give me some comparison rate quotes?

Brooke

Philadelphia PA

Welcome to Philadelphia, Brooke. Yes, I’d imagine it’s a lot less stressful to drive in Philadelphia than New York!

As with most states in the US, at the minimum, you need to purchase auto liability insurance if you intend to drive your own car in Philadelphia.  Your coverage should include at least $5,000 of coverage for medical benefits for yourself and other identified beneficiaries, regardless of whose fault the accident is. In case someone is injured, your policy needs to be able to provide $15,000 coverage per person with at least $30,000 coverage each time an accident occurs. Finally, your chosen auto liability insurance should be able to provide at least $5,000 of coverage for any damage to property in case of accidents where you are at fault. Of course, higher coverage should be available from auto insurers in PA.

Ask for discounts, you never know what you might be able to get and how much you can save by asking. Some popular discounts can be given for:

1. Military personnel

2. Good grade students

3. Union membership and bank member affiliations

4. Safe drivers with no claims in last 7 years

5. Defensive driving school attendance

6. Clean credit history – used by many carriers to determine payment risk

As a first-time car owner, your premiums may be a bit higher. Premiums are usually primarily based on the extent of coverage as well as your personal driving history and the insurer’s assessment of your risk potential. Why don’t you check out the available auto liability insurance packages available for Pennsylvania . If you enter your zip code in the form on this site, you can also get free quotes, which you can compare to determine the best value for your money. You’re welcome to write again, too, alrighty?

Auto Insurance Increase Because of Out of State Speeding Ticket

Reader’s Question:

My girlfriend was driving in Virginia and received a ticket for going 83 in a 65. She is from Delaware. Since the violation happened in another state, will this reflect on her driving record? Will this increase her auto insurance rate in Wilmington, Delaware?

Nicolas

Wilmington, DE

Your home state Delaware (DE) and Virginia (VA) are both members of the Drivers License Compact (DLC). This compact requires its member states to report out-of-state moving violations committed by a person to his or her home state.

Driving for over 23 mph beyond the speeding limit is considered a 6 point offense in Virginia. On the other hand, speeding over 20 mph in Delaware is given a 5 point offense. In addition, if a driver is found to be driving 20 – 24 miles beyond the limit, the DE Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) would send a letter of advisory to the driver.

Since your girlfriend was ticketed in Virginia for over speeding, the Virginia DMV would report to Delaware DMV her traffic violation. The Delaware DMV includes on a driver’s record all the traffic violations committed whether it happened in Delaware or out-of-state. However, it does not say though if there would be points assigned if a traffic violation is done out-of-state.

You must remember though that auto insurance rate does not depend on the points given to the driver per se but to the violation itself. Since there was indeed a violation for over speeding committed by your girlfriend, there is a possibility that this would increase her auto insurance rate but that still depends on her insurer. If she sees an increase on her car insurance premium, I would suggest shopping for affordable car insurance rates in Wilmington, DE through our website.

Do You Need To Have Proof of Car Insurance in North Carolina

Reader’s Question:

Are you required to have proof of auto insurance with you while driving in Durham North Carolina?

Greg

Durham, NC

You can verify with the North Carolina state statutes, to check if it specifically notes that proof of insurance must be with at all times while driving or not.

Even if the state statute does not expressly note that the insurance card must be in a car while they are driving, it is always advisable to have the vehicle’s insurance card with the car in case a police officer requests proof of insurance or if you must provide this insurance information to others after being in a crash.

For more North Carolina insurance laws inquiries try contacting the NC Department of Insurance.

Commuter Car Insurance Coverage Question

Reader’s Question:

Is it legal to include “commuting to work” if I only work 1-2 days a week, and if this isn’t my main work? What would happen if I get involve in an accident on the way to this part time job? Would I be covered under comprehensive coverage?

Bart

Los Angeles, CA

Basically, comprehensive coverage covers your car, and sometimes other cars you may be driving for losses resulting from accidents other than collision. For instance, comprehensive coverage insurance covers damage to your vehicle if it is stolen; or damaged by fire, flood, or animals. (It will pay to fix your car less the deductible you choose.)

Now, if you are talking about having an accident with another car, you would be talking about collision coverage then to help fix your car. Regarding your other concern, concealment or keeping information from your insurance provider and material misrepresentation by not telling the truth to your insurance carrier gives your insurance carrier grounds for voiding your car insurance policy. This means the insurance provider, will give you back any monies you paid into your auto insurance policy, and you will be stuck paying for the claims resulting from the accident.

Also, your insurer will probably not void it unless the case creates an increase in insurance rate or creates a situation that they would normally not insure. If you commute to and from work, where no business use is done in relation to your work, this is considered pleasure use. If this is the case, your car insurance rate should not change – unless your insurer rates your premiums based on your car’s daily mileage. Your best option is to contact your insurance provider. Let them know about your part time job and, let your insurance carrier determine your best course of action for your auto insurance needs.

Will Car Insurance Be Cheaper With a Hybrid Vehicle

Reader’s Question:

Am I going to have cheaper insurance with hybrid autos? If so, can you give me some suggestion?

Richard

Bakersfield, CA

On 2005 most auto insurance providers are now providing discounts to hybrid auto owners. The Farmer’s Insurance Group has announced a 5% discount in California for hybrid or alternative fuel vehicles.

In addition to that, Traveler’s insurance gives a 10% discount on hybrid insurance. Only some states apply this discount and to certain coverages. This discount only applies to certain states and car insurance coverages. If you would like to get discounts for hybrid auto insurance, you will need to shop and search online. You may also call insurance regulator in your state to verify if they have list of insurers that allow discounts for hybrid car insurance.

This is a great way to have a cheap car insurance.

Do I Need SR22 Auto Insurance if I Have Full Coverage Now

Reader’s Question:

I have a full coverage when I received DWI? Do I still need an sr-22?

Melanie

Good question Melanie.

This case may vary from state to state. Generally though, you need an sr-22 if you did not pass or comply to your states financial responsibility at the time that you were cited for DWI. Most people would use the term “full coverage” to refer to the physical damage coverage.Physical coverage actually consists of collision and comprehensive coverage. The collision coverage generally covers the damage to the vehicle cause by collision in an accident. Comprehensive coverage on the other hand covers any damages to your car caused by vandalism, glass breakage and even theft. The state would require you to have the minimum liability coverage of certain bodily injury and property damage liability at the time of your DWI.

So if you need a “hardship” license to go to work for instance, you will definitely need an sr-22. This may be available in the current insurance company that you have.

Goodluck!
