What is SR 22? and how do I find car insurance with SR22 here in Illinois?
Oliver
Chicago, IL
For those people who have gotten their licenses suspended due to reckless driving, driving without adequate auto insurance coverage, DUI (Driving Under the Influence) or DWI (Driving Within the Influence), or has accumulated one too many traffic violations, one of the first steps into getting your license reinstated is to get car insurance with SR22 certification.
An SR 22 is simply a form that is filed to your state Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) as proof that you have adequate financial capacity to pay anyone you injure as well as properties you may damage during a car accident. This financial capacity is mostly in the form of auto insurance coverage. The state would want to make sure that individuals with histories of risky driving have adequate insurance for every citizens mutual protection.
To get an SR22 form you will need to find an insurance carrier that is authorized to file SR22′s. The insurance carrier is the one to forward the certificate to the DMV office. You also need to remember that this kind of form (and the auto insurance policy itself) needs to be maintained for at least three years, without any gaps.
We encourage you to begin your search by using the free insurance quote tool found on this website. Not only can you easily find the companies that can help you file an SR22 form, you will also get access to timely rate information and be able to compare a wide range of insurance carriers easily.
How Does Auto Insurance With SR22 Coverage Work
Reader’s Question:
My mom said I have to get an sr22 insurance because of my violations. What is SR22 insurance and how does it work?
Michelle
Washington, DC
SR22 insurance is a type of certificate that insurance companies provide to drivers who have been involved in various traffic violations such as driving under influence, reckless driving, failure to bring their insurance, or various moving violations.
When you are given a SR22 insurance, it means that your insurance company testifies to your state’s motor vehicle department that you have met the required minimum liability coverage.
The basic kinds of SR22 insurance are sr22 car insurance, sr22 motorbike insurance and sr22 non-owner insurance. The SR22 non-vehicle owners insurance is given to drivers who want to have a driver’s license albeit not having their own vehicles. This usually covers basic liability protection, body injury coverage, and property protection.
There are varied requirements on this type of insurance and SR-22 is not usually given by all insurance companies since it is considered a high risk type of coverage. Those who need to have this type of insurance should get one only from a reputed insurance company. The penalty for lapsed coverage can be severe, thus it is important to get insurance and SR-22 coverage only from a trusted insurance firm.
Grace Period for Auto Insurance Claims After Accident in Florida?
Reader’s Question:
My cousin got involved in a vehicular accident last month. It is not her fault. There was no serious physical damage on her part and she just sustained minor injuries. However, there was so much damaged on her car. What I am curious about, is there a certain grace period for filing for auto insurance claim in Florida? I mean since this happened like a month ago, can my cousin still file for a claim? For how long are we given the grace period before we lose our right to file for claims?
Christine
Central Pasco, FL
In general, auto insurance polices states that in an event of vehicular accidents or loss to the policyholder, a claim must be done the soonest the possible time. By doing this, your car insurance claim would be considered in a timely manner by your insurer. The longer period you failed to file for the claim, the more difficult it would be to set the facts relating to your claims. In addition, if you filed for a delayed claim you must be prepared to explain to your car insurance company the reason for the delay. A claim adjuster would determine the total loss you had and the coverage you would have.
As to your question, your cousin can still file for a claim. As per Florida law, you could file for a claim within the four year period. Meaning to say four years from the time the accident happened. However, I would not suggest you wait that long before making the claim. Once involved in an accident, file the claim as soon as possible to avoid any future problems you might encounter if you opted to delay it.

Do I Need To Purchase Out Of State Auto Insurance

My job is very flexible that it allows me to visit my boyfriend frequently in Daytona Beach, Florida. And right now, I’m leaving with him. But my place of residence is in Georgia. My question is do I need to purchase auto insurance even if don’t really live here? I know I frequently visit him but technically I still live in Georgia because every once in a while I need to report back to my work in Georgia. Help please anyone! Thanks!

For you to be required to purchase auto insurance in Florida, I need to know first on how frequently or how long you stay in Florida every year. My boyfriend also frequently visits me and he’s from another state. And he was required to purchase auto insurance here.
According to the Florida Department of Financial Services (DFS) fact sheet that I’ve read, if you stay in Florida, whether you are seasonal or part-time resident for 90 days or more, then you are required to purchase car insurance coverage of Personal Injury Protection (PIP) and Property Damage Liability (PDL). Just to make it clear, the mentioned 90 days does not necessarily have to be consecutive, with this I am assuming that it could be accumulative.
